Healing and creativity are interconnected.
Hilary
Mackey combines her own talent and interest in working with fabric with her passion for deep psychological exploration. She has creatively adapted the age-old feminine ritual of necessity into
one-of-a-kind expressions that encompass the essence and uniqueness of her clients. Hilary has been commissioned to create varied works, such as shawls, shamanic garments, wall-hangings, and family
memorials and her works are created from ideas gleaned from interviews, photographs, diaries, and biographies of her clients.
Hilary creates fabric art pieces for clients in Canada, the US, and Europe who wish to
memorialize people, events, and important transitions in their lives. Her work has garnered much attention and commendation that led to favourable reviews in the Vancouver Sun and the Georgia Straight
as well as spots on both CTV and Global TV.

Expressing one’s essence through fabric art. |
Silken Mosaics are the culmination of many years of experimentation with colour, fabric, and form. My earliest creative efforts involved fabric.
After watching me try to join pieces of fabric together in all the ways a child could think of, my mother gave me my first sewing machine when I was 7. Since then I have worked with paint, clay,
photography, video, costume design, dance, and music. And as a bodyworker, I have been guided to design custom pieces for people that express and enhance their individuality.
I
love colour, mixing old and new fabrics together, and creating both functional and non-functional designs in fabric. It appeals to my sense of history and environmental values. From my
grandmother through my mother to me came the skill of reworking existing articles of clothing into something new. (Hilary Mackey, 2004)
